Dunki movie review: Raj Kumar Hirani is a new name added to the list of Anubhav Sinha, Rahul Dholakia, Imtiaz Ali and Aanand L Rai. Kanika Dhillon, along with Abhijat Joshi and Raj Kumar Hirani, has spread a raita of three and a half hours on this story of a three and a half minute long music video and has spread it in such a way that till the end, not only these three, but even Shahrukh Khan is not able to reconcile.

What a wonderful start the year 2023 had with Yash Raj Films’ blockbuster film ‘Pathan’ on 25th January this year. Shahrukh Khan, along with Deepika Padukone’s shameless colours and handsome villain John Abraham, pulled the audience sitting at home to the theatres. Then this trend continued from ‘Gadar 2’ till ‘Jawaan’ and ‘Animal’. And, Hindi cinema fans were fully hopeful that Shahrukh Khan would end the year with a blockbuster family entertainer.

And, now it is a situation that the post-mortem of Shah Rukh Khan’s film ‘Dunki’ will continue for a long time to come as to where the superhit pair of Abhijat Joshi and Raj Kumar Hirani went wrong in this film? Did Kanika Dhillon make a mistake in trying to make the film ‘modern’ or was there a line from the heart-touching song sung by Manna Dey in the film ‘Kabuliwala’ – ‘Hum Jahan Paadna Hue, Us Wahaan Hi Nikle Dum, Tujh Pe Dil Kurbaan’.
But by making a film in 2023, Raj Kumar Hirani made a mistake in sensing the pulse of his audience. What a wonderful song Prem Dhawan had written in this film released in 1961! Had he been alive, he would have turned 100 this year.
Dunki movie review: ‘Dunki’ started after the interval
The thing about which there was a lot of publicity in the film ‘Dunki’, remains missing in the film till the interval. The film takes so long in establishing its premise that the second half of the film is unable to handle it even after trying hard. And, the song Aate Aate written by Javed Akhtar sung by Sonu Nigam in the film inspired by Prem Dhawan’s song has bored the audience so much that no one even pays attention to the lyrics of this song.
This time Raj Kumar Hirani left his familiar corridors and reached Punjab. In the story of youth desperate to go abroad in the village Laltu, a soldier named Harry Singh Dhillon (yes, a soldier again) appears. He comes to return the tape recorder of his rescuer but stays here to fulfil the dreams of the people here. The film takes so much time in establishing the premise of a soldier illegally transporting these people to London that the iodine evaporates in the air by the time the real salt is tasted.

Not only has Raj Kumar Hirani lost the faith of his fans in ‘Dunki’, his first film made after coming out of the Vidhu Vinod Chopra camp, Shahrukh Khan has also left no stone unturned in breaking the hearts of his fans. His character keeps speaking Punjabi throughout the film. It clearly shows that his Punjabi is no longer the same as it would have been before he came to Bombay from Delhi.
A lot of advertisements are shown before and during the start of the film, to show what is the brand value of Shahrukh Khan? He is also seen with his arms spread in his familiar style in a washing powder advertisement. And, on this occasion, we remember that announcement video of the film ‘Dunki’ in which Shahrukh had jokingly talked about getting his hand chopped off if he got Raj Kumar Hirani’s film. As impressive as this video of the film ‘Dunki’ was, the film ‘Dunki’ has become ineffective.

Seeing Shah Rukh Khan in this film, it seems that his getup has been shown changing to match his getup in the film ‘Pathan’ and the film ‘Jawaan’. Apart from the film’s story, screenplay, direction and Shahrukh Khan’s average acting, the other major weakness of the film is its production design. Before setting up the sets of Punjab, the team of this film seems to have watched a lot of Yash Chopra’s films. Havelis and streets from Yash Raj Films‘ ‘Veer Zara’ to ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ are seen in the film ‘Dunki’. London, Dubai, UAE are all seen. Apart from the reverse Dunki scene, there is nothing in the film that will make you jump out of your seat and think what is going to happen next?
All the actors look so white that even the director has to insert a line to establish this, ‘Meri Maa Kehti Thi, you seem like a complete foreigner’. Songs, Shaane toh ji, are as they are. There was great anger over the fact that the years passing so happily are about to end with the release of such a film.
